the story behind the neon

Our Story

67 years ago, a man with a skillet, a dream, and a borrowed grill changed Benoni's food scene forever. This is the story of Neon Bites.

"A good meal doesn't need a fancy address. It needs good meat, good oil, and somebody who gives a damn."

— Big Earl Kowalski, founder, 1957

67 Years in the Making

The Beginning

Big Earl Kowalski, a Polish immigrant with a love for American road trips and a talent for grilling, opened a small burger stand on Rynfield Ave. Twelve seats, one grill, and a dream.

The Neon Lights Go Up

Earl invested his savings into a full diner fitout. The iconic red neon sign — still glowing today — went up on a Friday night. The queue stretched around the block by Saturday morning.

A Second Generation

Earl's daughter Rita took over the kitchen and introduced the now-legendary Atomic Shake. She also started the tradition of playing classic rock on the jukebox — still going strong.

A Close Call

A kitchen fire almost ended it all. The Benoni community rallied together — customers, suppliers, and neighbours helped rebuild Neon Bites in just six weeks. We never forgot it.

Third Generation

Rita's son Marco took the reins. He modernised the kitchen, expanded the menu, and brought in craft sodas — but kept every original recipe exactly as Earl wrote them.

Still Going Strong

67 years later, Neon Bites is still family-run, still grilling on the same street, and still refusing to compromise on quality. The neon sign still flickers a bit on cold nights. We like it that way.
